Elvira Dones: The short story of Lukas Santana

A literary account of life on death row.

Author and filmmaker Elvira Dones has experienced many worlds: born in Albania, which she was unable to return to one day for political reasons, she has lived in Switzerland's Ticino canton since 1988. She also spent ten years in the US, first in Washington, then in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2011, she made a documentary about the death penalty (“Don't Kill My Father”) – the subject and the fates she encountered stayed with her and inspired her novel “The short story of Lukas Santana”, which is currently being published in German, translated from Italian by Adrian Giacomelli.

Tuğba Ayaz talks to Elvira Dones about this novel, her research and experiences, and her view of the USA.

Moderation: Tuğba Ayaz
