Literary tips for September

How to discuss serious topics with children and what is more beneficial than dolphin therapy, that's what our literary tips in September know.

How to talk to children about climate change?

There was a time when my daughter thought the world would end if we forgot to close the fridge door. Of course, it's not quite like that, we always broach the subject over dinner and again and again I notice how difficult it is to find the right words for what I myself don't know either, the great fears. In the series of talks accompanying the exhibition "Nature. And us?", children's author Kristina Scharmacher and psychologist Remo Ryser are looking for child-friendly answers to the climate crisis that will give courage for the future.

Marl on the lake

Before they fall into hibernation, cheerful summer evenings are once again conjured up on the secluded boards of the Enge lakeside resort. Bernese musician and cabaret artist Halenka leads us through the "Märli for adults", more civilised than the Züri Fäsch, more clothed than the Streetparade and definitely better and cheaper than dolphin therapy. Patrick Frey, Rebekka Lindauer, Timmermahn, Seraina Kobler and Max Küng read from their latest stories.

"Night note" at the Sihlfeld cemetery

On our own account: After the summer break, the "Nachtschein" finally celebrates its vernissage - and in the middle of the set. We continue reading the story of Rosa Zambrano as she adapts to the cold now in winter. And plants black tulip bulbs, winter garlic, sea cabbage seeds in the soil of her small old town garden. Of course, it doesn't stop there, but after a fire at the Enge harbour, she is once again in the middle of an investigation into the murder of a young woman. When Leo, her great ex-love, suddenly reappears in town, let's just say it's complicated. But then, life is not a bright, eternal summer ...

Distraction from the "small, personal catastrophes

In his new novel, bestselling Italian author Paolo Giardano ("The Loneliness of Prime Numbers") writes poignantly of the search for a fulfilled life in the face of planetary and personal catastrophes - and opportunities. The hero in "Tasmania" is an author, journalist and physicist. After he and his wife have to say goodbye to their lifelong dream of having a child together, he flees from the difficult family situation to the climate conference in Paris. The Giardano writes impressively about the blending of private and public issues. The conversation is led by the author Franco Supino. Writer and actress Ariela Sarbacher will read selected passages.
