Akademisch gebildet, politisch engagiert, christlich, muslimisch und sekular. Der Film ist weit mehr als ein Gespräch zwischen ihnen. Er ist vielmehr eine öffentliche politische Debatte, welche die Geschichte Ägyptens, die Ära Nasser und Sadat, das Verhältnis von Staat und Religion in den Mittelpunkt rückt und mögliche zukünftige Visionen für eine arabische Gesellschaft diskutiert. Die Dokumentation geht politischen Stadtpunkten nach und rückt die Aufstände von 2011 in einen grösseren historischen Kontext. Auch wirft der Film die universelle Frage auf, wie es möglich ist, Freundschaften trotz unterschiedlichen politischen, sozialen und religiösen Anschauungen aufrecht zu erhalten. IM ANSCHLUSS Gespräch mit der Filmemacherin. TAHANI RACHED ist 1947 in Kairo geboren und zog 1966 nach Quebec, Kanada. Nach einem Studium an der École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal engagierte sie sich in Nachbarschaftsprojekten, bevor sie 1972 ihren ersten Dokumentarfilm POUR FAIRE CHANGEMENT, der die Massstäbe ihrer zukünftigen Arbeiten setzt. Von Migration handelt ihr erster Spielfilm LES VOLEURS DE JOBS, 1979, dem eine 6-teilige Radiosendung über Quebecs arabische Community folgte. Als Mitarbeiterin beim National Film Board Canada nimmt sie sich herausfordernden Themen an: WAR IN BEIRUT! NOT ENOUGH DEATH TO GO ROUND, 1983, in AU CHIC RESTO POP, 1990, erzählt sie vom Ideenreichtum marginalisierter Menschen, 1993 schildert sie in DOCTORS WITH HEART den Kampf gegen Aids. Es folgen weitere Dokumentarfilme, in denen ihre sozialen Anliegen zum Ausdruck kommen: FOUR WOMEN OF EGYPT, 1997, IN EMERGENCY! A CRITICAL SITUATION, 1999, FOR A SONG, 2001 und SORAIDA, A WOMAN OF PALESTINE, 2004. Ab 2005 drehte sie wieder in Ägypten: EL BANATE DOL / THESE GIRLS, 2006 und GIRAN / NEIGHBORS, 2009. Version: FOUR WOMEN FROM EGYPT The film accompanies four friends, four strong personalities in Cairo. Amina, Safynaz, Shahenda and Wedad were born between late 1920 and late 1930. They are academic, politically involved, Christian, Muslim and secular. The movie is much more than a conversation between them. Rather, it is a public political debate that focuses on the history of Egypt, the Nasser and Sadat era, the relationship between state and religion, and discusses potential future visions for Arab society. The documentary traces political points in the city and puts the uprisings of 2011 in a larger historical context. The film also raises the universal question of how it is possible to maintain friendships in spite of different political, social and religious views. AFTERTALK WITH THE FILMMAKER TAHANI RACHED, born 1947 in Egypt, settled in Quebec in 1966. After attending Montreal's École des Beaux-Arts, she was involved in community action until she made her first film, Pour Faire Changement ,1972, a documentary which set the tone for all her future work. In 1979, her first feature film, Les Voleurs de Jobs, revealed her distinctive view of the world. A documentary on immigration, it demonstrated her ability to capture reality. This was followed by a series of six half-hour documentaries for Radio-Quebec on Quebec's Arab community. 

As a NFB staff filmmaker from 1980 to 2004, she tackled sensitive topics: War in Beirut! Not Enough Death to Go Round, 1983; the resourcefulness of the disadvantaged, through the songs in Au Chic Resto Pop, 1990 and a doctor's battle against AIDS in Doctors with Heart, 1993. Four Women of Egypt, 1997, features four women who couldn't be more different but who are nevertheless united in their search for meaning and tolerance through 50 years of contemporary Egyptian history. In Emergency! A Critical Situation, 1999, an entire emergency room team speaks about their difficult work, while in For a Song, 2001, it is extracurricular activities such as singing in a choir that are found to restore social ties, lift the soul and create beauty. Soraida, A Woman of Palestine, 2004, captures the reflections, concerns and imagination of a Palestinian woman, her family and her neighborhood, the soul of a nation that is doing its best to survive the war and occupation. 
In 2005, she comes back to Egypt and directs El-Banate Dol / These Girls. In 2007, worked on her latest film Giran /Neighbors. Her films are screened at international festivals and awarded with prizes
