Der Vortrag findet in englischer Sprache statt.
For thousands of years, humans have consumed beer, wine, cannabis, opium, hallucinogenic mushrooms, tobacco and other psychoactive plants and substances. Different cultures have come up with different ways of understanding and using the Rausch, or «intoxication», induced by these plants and substances. Some consider it as a source of knowledge, while others view it as entertainment, or as a threat to public health. From In vino veritas to Amazonian plant teachers, from the French concept of savoir-boire to shamanic tobacco usage, from semi-synthetic compound LSD to specific brain receptors, an anthropologist attempts a wide and sober consideration of inebriation across cultures. He learns along the way that it makes sense to take one’s Rausch seriously.
Jeremy Narby (born 1959 in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian anthropologist and author. In his books, Narby examines shamanism and molecular biology, and shamans' knowledge of botanics and biology through the use of entheogens across many cultures. Narby studied history at the University of Kent at Canterbury, and received a doctorate in anthropology from Stanford University. For the last 28 years, he has coordinated projects in favour of Amazonian people for Swiss NGO «Nouvelle Planète», involving land titles, bilingual education, and sustainable forestry. He has written several books including «The cosmic serpent, DNA and the origins of knowledge» (1998, New York, Penguin Putnam/Tarcher), and «Intelligence in nature: an inquiry into knowledge» (2005, New York, Penguin Putnam/Tarcher), and co-edited with Francis Huxley «Shamans through time: 500 years on the path to knowledge» (2001, New York, Penguin Putnam/Tarcher).
