Money

Robert Bresson (France/Switzerland 1983)

A counterfeit 500-franc note is in circulation. A young man is wrongly suspected of having something to do with it. He ends up in prison for a short while. But afterwards, nothing is the same as before; the course of his life has changed – he will take revenge on society. In his final film, Bresson depicts the cruel course of events in a radical manner, without sentimentality, psychological analysis or metaphors.

‘That was the first Bresson film I’d ever seen; it was showing for a weekend at the Hogg Auditorium back then. I went on Friday and watched it, but somehow found it difficult to get to grips with (…), so I went back again on Saturday, read Tolstoy’s source novel, did some research on Bresson, and then, by Sunday evening, it suddenly clicked for me, and I was blown away by the film (…). Bresson is one of the few filmmakers in history of whom one can truly say that they have created their own cinematic language.’ (Richard Linklater, Austin Film Society)
