Shutter (Sutter kodtid winyan)
Banjong Pisanthanakun, Parkpoom Wongpoom (Thailand 2004)
‘On their way home from a wedding reception, the photographer Tun and his girlfriend Jane accidentally run over a young woman on a dark, deserted road. Unsure of what to do, Tun suggests they make a run for it. A few days later, he notices that the photos from his latest assignment are marred by streaks of light and the ghostly presence of the dead girl. (…) The couple are faced with a mystery when they learn that there is neither a report of a death nor a body to be found for the night in question. Thailand’s latest foray into the realm of the supernatural is heavily influenced by Japanese horror traditions, and the story is best explained by its original title Sutter Kodtid Winyan, which loosely translates as ‘Press the shutter and you’ll see a ghost’. Had Tun and Jane behaved sensibly, the film might have become a drama. But they flee, and in a horror film, the decision not to take responsibility for one’s actions always has terrible consequences. (…) Shutter is the feature film debut of Parkpoom Wongpoom and Banjong Pisanthanakun, who have succeeded, not least, in seamlessly integrating the essence and art of photography into their work.’ (Brandon Wee, Viennale 2025)
