‘Ingeborg Bachmann meets Elfriede Jelinek meets Werner Schroeter: a radical mix which, however, results in a surprisingly disciplined film, tailor-made for Isabelle Huppert: an unnamed writer lives with a man called Malina, in a relationship based more on reason than on love. One day she meets Ivan, with whom she falls head over heels in love – and thereby becomes increasingly a prisoner of her dreams and fears. Georg Seesslen: ‘Schroeter’s camera relentlessly focuses on the decline of a human being who, driven by an absolute demand of the emotions, is cast back into an equally absolute solitude. (…) All that remains for her is to vanish – and that can only mean death.’ (Florian Widegger, Filmarchiv Austria)
