Sunset Boulevard
Billy Wilder (USA 1950)
Screening of a unique 35 mm print from the Cinémathèque Suisse collection.
‘An ageing, once-celebrated silent film diva is obsessed with her desire for a comeback and persuades a young, debt-ridden Hollywood screenwriter to revise a screenplay she has written. When she falls in love with him, it is only the beginning of the end of a disaster.’ (Filmpodium, Jul/Aug/Sep 2019)
Right at the midpoint of the century, Sunset Boulevard looks back through the dark-tinted lens of film noir at the early decades of film history. Familiar faces appear: Gloria Swanson, Buster Keaton, Erich von Stroheim … But the film also explores themes that have shaped cinema in general: the cult of stardom and the media machine, the transition from silent to sound film, and the artificial studio worlds of the major production companies. Wilder is already offering a swan song to classic Hollywood not long before its demise – one of several ‘Sunsets’ to which the film (retrospectively) seems to allude. (dw)
