The guilds during the Reformation
A driving force behind the upheaval
During the Reformation, Zurich’s guilds played a central role. Since the introduction of the guild constitution by Rudolf Brun in 1336, they had governed the city as politically influential associations of citizens and craftsmen. Many guilds supported Huldrych Zwingli’s reforms and helped ensure that the Council was able to implement the Reformation swiftly. Their involvement made Zurich a defining centre of the urban Reformation in the 16th century. A tour of the Old Town from the Grossmünster to the Predigerkirche.
