A man and a woman meet at a party. Marianne is a quantum physicist; Roland is a beekeeper. And what happens next may be fate, or it may be chance – in any case, according to the laws of theoretical physics, it is completely unpredictable. In the world of quantum mechanics, there are no certainties, only probabilities. British playwright Nick Payne uses the model of the hypothetical multiverse as the basis for the classic ‘boy meets girl’ plot and explores several alternative realities simultaneously. Is it love at first sight, or perhaps at the fifth? Does love fail after a few weeks, a few years, or right at the small talk stage? With humour, Payne accompanies Marianne and Roland through possible highs and lows, crises and moments of happiness. He plays with the longing for a happy ending, right up to its bitter conclusion. ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ can be hopelessly romantic or a sobering reality that sooner or later sets in – it is the ultimate challenge the couple must, or ought to, face in the end. For in love and physics, after all, nothing is definitively predictable.

Director Elina Finkel (Artistic Director at the Landestheater Tübingen from the 2027/28 season) explores the play of seemingly limitless possibilities with her ensemble. The cast features Anna Grisebach (PRIMA FACIE) and Johann Jürgens (DIE WELT IM RÜCKEN), the protagonists of the Kurtheater’s last two in-house productions.
