Don’t be afraid of wasps and hornets

Understanding wasps – and recognising their vital role in nature.

Wasps and hornets often have a bad reputation – yet they play a surprisingly important role in our ecosystem. On this course, you’ll learn about the six colony-forming wasp species typically found near residential areas in Zurich: How are their colonies structured? Why does each colony last only one season, and why do only the young queens survive the winter to found a new nest in spring?

You’ll also learn how they feed their brood with flies and plant pests, why this makes them valuable beneficial insects – and why a wasp or hornet’s nest in the neighbourhood is often more of a benefit than a cause for concern.
