Collegium Novum Zurich #4 - ÉCLAT (Zurich)
Pierre Boulez Éclat / Multiples for large ensemble (1970)
Pierre Boulez Sur Incises for three percussionists, three harps and three pianos (1996)
Pierre Boulez's uncompromising and radical style not only provided much-desired new impetus, but also caused the odd scandal in the new music scene. He gave Éclat the title of his piece for large ensemble, which premiered in 1965. It is based on short flashes of sound, musical splinters and motivic sparks that ignite a compositional fire. Multiples, written shortly afterwards, multiplies the material kaleidoscopically. And in Sur Incises - dedicated to Paul Sacher on his 90th birthday - Boulez also works with the principle of (multiple) mirroring. The result is explosive music that is deliberately antagonistic and manipulative. The CNZ already recorded the two works in 2021; they are now being released as a new CD by Bastille Musique to coincide with Pierre Boulez's 100th birthday.
