No gravel square in the city is as authentic as that of the Kanzleiareal in hectic Kreis 4, where the Xenix cinema and the Xenix bar are located. A home for films, a space for cineastic discoveries and carefully curated programmes, for discussions ...
Premiere: Coexistence, My Ass!
Amber Fares, USA/F 2025 | On 21. 11. in the presence of the director
Noam Shuster-Eliassi grew up as a model child in an Arab-Jewish "peace village" before becoming a stand-up comedian. The Gaza war has further sharpened the Israeli activist's political position.
It sounds like a bad joke to talk about peaceful coexistence in Israel/Palestine in view of the current situation in the Middle East. In more hopeful times, the village "Oasis of Peace" was founded, where Jewish and Palestinian people consciously live together as equals. Noam Shuster, who is Jewish, grew up here. She speaks Hebrew and Arabic and belongs to a previously hopeful generation. As an adult, however, disillusionment prevailed. Initially working for the UN, Noam switches to satire and stages the one-woman show "Coexistence, My Ass!"
The Lebanese-Canadian director Amber Fares follows the charismatic Noam, who is also successful with Palestinians, for several years. She creates both an intimate portrait and a documentary about Israel's slide to the right. But after 7 October and Israel's reaction, nobody feels like laughing anymore. After an initial crisis, Noam sharpens her political stance: there can be no peace without equality. And so she can turn to comedy again. An important film that addresses contradictions and does not shy away from combining anger, sadness and humour.
- On 21. 11. followed by a discussion with director Amber Fares and producer Rachel Leah Jones
