The Bigger Picture: Design - Women - Society

Exhibition

Women have made decisive contributions to the development of modern design, be it as designers of furniture, fashion, graphics or industrial products, as architects and also as entrepreneurs or professors. Their roles in design creation are manifold, especially in emerging design fields where research or new technologies also play a significant role and collaborative and interdisciplinary forms of work are spreading. Today, the presence and influence of women is growing both in practice and in education. Nevertheless, their achievements have not been adequately recognised and appreciated for a long time, and a look at the history of design shows that it is characterised by stereotypical ideas and role models. Currently, exhibitions around the world are putting the spotlight on the design work of women and their impact and telling the story of design differently. At the same time, museums are launching critical reappraisals of their own collection practices.

"The Bigger Picture: Design - Women - Society" at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur makes the work of women designers visible over a period of 120 years. It extends the exhibition "Here We Are! Women in Design 1900 - today" at the Vitra Design Museum with positions from the Swiss context. At the same time, with selected works, it opens up a forum for a forward-looking discussion with a view to current developments in design and social change.

This includes questions about gender relations and diversity as well as social justice or ecological and economic sustainability. In this way, "The Bigger Picture" not only wants to make women's achievements more visible and introduce social dimensions of design, but also asks how we can make our world more inclusive and diverse in future.
