Film tips for June

Open-air cinema in the Schiffbau, art house documentary in the Arthouse Piccadilly and not one but two film festivals: the Black Film Festival and the Iranian Film Festival.

Open-air cinema in the Schiffbau Garden

On the first three weekends in June, the Schiffbau Garden will become a summer cinema. The varied programme includes nine films - from the illuminating documentary "Au cœur du bois" to the Palme d'Or winner "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives" to the anime masterpiece "Princess Mononoke" - which deal with the topic of forests in very different ways. On several evenings, filmmakers such as Alice Schmid ("Das Mädchen vom Änziloch") or Tizian Büchi ("L'îlot") are also invited.

From Friday, 02 June 2023, Schiffbau Atrium, 9:30 pm

Sunday matinee at the end of the Zurich Art Weekend

On the weekend of the Zurich Art Weekend, the Arthouse Piccadilly is showing "Through the Gates of Hell into Paradise". The documentary tells the story of the Kunsthaus Zürich from its opening until today. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with former museum curator Bice Curiger. The Sunday matinee is the ideal way to round off an art-intensive weekend.

Sunday, 11 June 2023, Arthouse Piccadilly 1, 11:00 a.m

Pearls from the Black Film Landscape

The young Black Film Festival Zurich will once again present a variety of feature films, documentaries and short films that convey impressions of Black life experiences. Over the course of a weekend, pearls of Black filmmaking outside the mainstream will be shown at the Houdini cinema. The festival opens with the haunting abuse drama "Enterrés" by Françoise Ellong. The fourth edition will be complemented by a supporting programme with an exhibition and workshops at the Maxim Theatre.

From Friday, 16 June 2023, Houdini, 6:30 p.m

Filmmaking by Iranian Women Directors: Women, Filming, Freedom

The Iranian Film Festival is also entering its ninth round. Against the background of the ongoing protests in Iran, the festival has decided to show only four films by four women directors. Two of these films can be seen at the Filmpodium this month: Both "Circumstance" by Maryam Keshavarz and "The Blue Veiled" by Rakhshan Banietemad tell of tragically beautiful romances in which the main characters fight for their love against all odds. Filmmaker Keshavarz will be present for a Q&A afterwards.

Friday, 16 June at 18:00 and Friday, 23 June 2023 at 20:45, Filmpodium
