Film tips for September

Premiere at Xenix, psychoanalytical suggestions at Arthouse Piccadilly, lecture series at Filmpodium and a short film programme at the Rote Fabrik.

Premiere of this year's main prize winner of the Solothurn Film Festival

In addition to film works from recent years and decades, the Xenix regularly presents premieres. In September, "Until Branches Bend" will be screened in the presence of director Sophie Jarvis as part of the programme focus "Bodies and Choices - Abortion in Film". Her award-winning debut is about an unwanted pregnancy against the backdrop of an inevitable natural disaster. In the process, Jarvis packs highly topical themes such as abortion and the climate crisis into picturesque natural landscapes on analogue film.

Ukrainian first work in a psychoanalytical context

There has always been a close relationship between cinema and psychoanalysis. In film theory, an entire current is devoted to Freud's body of thought. The film series curated by "Cinépassion" at the Arthouse Piccadilly also approaches film from a psychoanalytical perspective. The 18th season opens with "The Wild Fields" by Yaroslav Lodygin. Lodygin's feature film debut about a family bond in the Donbass will then be commented on by Ukrainian studies professor Roman Dubasevych and discussed with the audience.

When the cinema becomes a lecture hall

Whoever is interested in other film-theoretical approaches besides psychoanalytic ones should pay a visit to the Filmpodium. Starting on 21 September, the university lecture series "Positions in Classical Film Theory" will be held there weekly as a public event. Using text and film examples, film theories from the beginnings to the 1960s will be discussed by film scholar Daniel Wiegand and guests. The lectures, which are open to the public, will be supplemented by subsequent film screenings. A short film programme by experimental filmmaker Maya Deren will kick things off.

Politically engaged short film programme

A short film programme put together by documentary filmmaker Olga Ştefan will be shown at the Rote Fabrik at the end of the month. Over the course of an afternoon, ten films by international artists will be shown that deal with social realities from different perspectives. The selected films use different approaches, be it humour or resolute criticism, to bring uncomfortable truths to light. The programme is divided into three thematic blocks: Poetics of Resistance, Personal Confessions and Broken Utopias.
