Film tips for March

Queer cinema, the best Swiss films of the year, creative children's workshop and conversation with indie icon Kelly Richardt.

Film screening and film recycling

The Swiss Youth Film Festival is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the festival has teamed up with the Xenix cinema to present selected gems from previous editions. The films on show testify to an extraordinary willingness to experiment, whether through painted film strips or the use of stop-motion. Afterwards, it's the young viewers' turn: with coloured pencils, scratching tools and recycled film material, they have the opportunity to create their own cinematic works. Sunday, 15 March 2026, Xenix Cinema, 2:15 p.m.

A tender portrait of an SM romance

Pink Apple kicks off at the end of March – and you can get a sneak preview at the Riffraff cinema, where the queer film festival is presenting a preview screening of Pillion. Premiered at Cannes, the film tells the story of an S&M relationship between a wallflower (Harry Melling) and a biker (Alexander Skarsgård). With his feature film debut, director Harry Lighton has created a love story that is as tender as it is thrilling.

Spotlight on domestic cinema

Los Angeles isn't the only place where film awards are presented in March – Zurich also celebrates its film industry. Every year, the Swiss Film Award honours outstanding works and influential personalities in national filmmaking. During the week of the award ceremony, from 23 to 29 March, the Filmpodium will be showing all the nominated films at a reduced admission price. On the weekend after the awards ceremony, the award-winning films will be shown again free of charge on the big screen.

From Monday, 23 March 2026, Filmpodium, 8:30 p.m.

Deconstructed road movie

Kelly Reichardt is one of the most important voices in contemporary US independent cinema. Her precisely composed, minimalist works play masterfully with genre forms and

set a deliberate counterpoint to the mainstream. She achieved her international breakthrough in 2008 with "Wendy and Lucy". This impressive anti-road movie starring Michelle Williams will be screened at Xenix in analogue 35 mm film. The screening will be followed by a video conversation with the director. Saturday, 28 March 2026, Kino Xenix cinema, 8:00 p.m.
