Gender rebels at the beginning of the 20th century

A series of films about gender and gender roles will be shown as part of the silent film festival at the Filmpodium. In a total of five short films, the characters rebel against gender stereotypes and celebrate the permeability of the sexes. The films from the years 1906 to 1926 illustrate the rapid change in ideas of gender and sexuality during this period. The programme is accompanied by live music.

Following the success of "Sick of Myself" (2022), filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli is once again bringing a bitterly evil comedy to the big screen: Dream Scenario revolves around a hapless family man (Nicolas Cage) who suddenly appears in the dreams of millions of people and thus inadvertently becomes a celebrity. The preview of the black comedy, which was produced by horror film director Ari Aster, will be shown at Xenix with an introduction by programme co-director Marius Kuhn and presented by Maximum Cinema at Riffraff.

Sofia Coppola's latest work on 35 mm

Another premiere will take place at Xenix: Sofia Coppola's latest work Priscilla will be shown there on 35 mm. Parts of the film were shot on analogue material, which is why it makes sense to see it in analogue in the cinema. Coppola tells the tragic love story between Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi) in haunting images, but from the point of view of the protagonist. The film is based on her memoirs "Elvis and Me" and is therefore an indispensable counterpart to Baz Luhrmann's dazzling "Elvis" (2022).

Documentary film about courageous journalists in Afghanistan

When the USA withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021 after 20 years, people flocked to the airports to leave the country. They knew what awaited them under the reinvigorated Taliban: violence, hunger, oppression of women. Since then, reporting has been quiet. However, some courageous journalists are not letting the repressive regime get them down. For example, those of the daily newspaper "Etilaat Roz", which investigates corruption and abuse of power. Coalmine is showing an Afghan documentary film from 2022 about the remarkable work of this daily newspaper.
