Live music in February

This month, it was really difficult to make a selection. There's a lot of good stuff on Zurich's stages, and one or two new discoveries have also been made.

Soyuz

A Belarusian band playing jazz grooves in a classic Brazilian 70s style? Sounds like the best of both worlds. And that's exactly what it is. Warm music from the cold East, a wonderful union - "soyuz" in Belarusian.

Flawless Issues, Blanche Biau

You can't go wrong with Flawless Issues. The Stuttgart-based musician delivers guitar music as it should be: Sometimes new wave, sometimes punk, always lo-fi. This at Helsinki, together with Zurich dark wave artist Blanche Biau, and the evening is saved.

Archive

Archive make music for eternity. The long progressive tracks from their album "You All Look the Same to Me" are still stuck in the ear canals more than 20 years after their release. The British band will be playing this album and its successor "Noise" live on 19 February and the two "Controlling Crowds" albums from 2009 the following day. These old gems from the band are currently being re-released as remastered versions.

Ali Dada, Domenique Dumont

The station no longer exists, but GDS.FM, after all the best radio station in our part of the world, lives on without its home. And it's coming to Moods with a programme that could hardly be more typical of the forgotten mucker radio station: twisted psychedelia beats from the Zurich band Ali Dada, mysteriousness and cinematic electronica from Domenique Dumont. The programme is framed by the well-known GDS DJs Sleepii and Chrigi G us Z.

Chester Watson & Elaquent

Another young US rapper that I didn't have on my radar before. Chester Watson makes clever lo-fi and psychedelia hip-hop and studied ballet before his music career. He comes to Helsinki with his producer colleague Elaquent, known for soulful, relaxed sounds.

Julie

Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr. are in the music of Julie, according to the concert announcement of Bogen F. And what can we say: it really is like that. The three young people from LA sound as if they've come straight out of the nineties. You might read that as a sign that everything is just repeating itself and nothing original is being created. But as long as it sounds like that, I don't mind for one evening.
