Diva Nation – Shamiran Istifan at the Aargauer Kunsthaus

What stories do objects that are easily overlooked tell? A letterbox, a bar of soap, a key? In Shamiran Istifan’s exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus, such everyday objects offer a glimpse into private stories and social structures. They reveal memories, desires and questions – about what becomes visible and what remains hidden.

For anyone who grew up in the noughties as part of a diaspora community, this juxtaposition may seem familiar: Pop stars, music videos and early internet culture coexist alongside family memories and the social norms of the country in which one lives. The glittering facades, angels, stars and terms such as

‘diva’, ‘muse’ or ‘star girl’ therefore do not merely evoke nostalgia. They serve as a reminder that different visual worlds and influences can all be part of the same person. Growing up takes place not only within family histories, pop culture and everyday life, but also under the gaze of others – and in the way one is perceived and categorised from the outside. All these layers overlap, sometimes contradicting one another whilst at the same time complementing each other.

Istifan’s exhibition makes this very simultaneity palpable. Rather than merging the different worlds into a single, seamless narrative, it allows them to coexist side by side, to touch and to clash with one another. The exhibition gives these worlds a space of their own, without separating them from one another or feeling the need to explain them exhaustively.
