On the hunt for the next piece

A good play doesn’t necessarily make a programme. Thomas Guglielmetti, programme director at the Winterthur Theatre, on the search for the right stories.

Thomas’s passion for the theatre was sparked when, after completing his training as an electronics technician, he set about gaining his A-levels through adult education. Instead of the many novels he was supposed to read for school, he preferred plays, as they were considerably shorter. “That way, I got to read far more stories for the same amount of time,” he says with a smile. But not only that, he found he enjoyed it – especially Schiller. This was followed by a degree in German Studies in Basel and a degree in Theatre Studies in Bern; alongside his studies, he earned a living as an electronics technician until he was able to take on a number of roles in the theatre world. Whenever he wanted a job, he’d go all out to get it. Whether as an assistant director, dramaturg or sound engineer. Networking was his currency. To that end, he travelled all over Switzerland on his GA travelcard. He also gained experience abroad, for example in Stuttgart. And in Mainz: that’s where he learnt everything he needs today – how a play unfolds, how an orchestra works, how to communicate with choir members. The various disciplines – drama, opera, dance, children’s and youth theatre – all have their own particularities. “Back then, everything revolved around the theatre round the clock; I think it was also an unhealthy time,” he recalls. But for him, it paid off.

– THOMAS GUGLIELMETTI

So Thomas brought a wealth of expertise with him when he took up the post of programme director at Theater Winterthur in 2010. He quickly realised that, for Winterthur audiences, the title and the playwrights or composers are at the heart of a production. These provide the audience with a point of reference and something to look forward to. With dance performances, it’s different; for Thomas, the music is the decisive factor: “If the music is completely avant-garde and offbeat, then you have to make sure that the standard of the company is particularly high.”

What Thomas particularly likes about the theatre is the live experience. No matter how well the play is written, on stage the actors, dancers and singers perform without any safety net. The curator experienced first-hand just how difficult this is when he was once persuaded by an artistic director to play a Swiss suitor in the play ‘Lulu’. Memorising the lines wasn’t easy for him at the time: ‘Even today, I still need a note for every little line.’ This experience showed him all the more just how much work goes into the artists’ performances.

From time to time, Thomas also wants to introduce theatregoers to lesser-known plays. Such as the play *Die Wurzel aus Sein* by the Lebanese-Canadian author and director Wajdi Mouawad, which the Burgtheater is staging in Winterthur on 13 and 14 January 2027: “It’s simply the best thing I’ve seen this year.”
