My first time ... at Xenix

In the heart of Zurich lies the Xenix, a gem of cinema culture - a meeting place for film enthusiasts and a haven for niche films.

(Reel change. There's only an intermission because the film reel has to be changed.)

As I left the cinema late at night on Valentine's Day, I too felt the magic of the Xenix.

At a time when cinema attendance is dwindling and streaming services dominate the market, Xenix proves that niche programmes and a loyal community can make a vital contribution to cinema culture. Xenix's dedication to going its own way and presenting topics outside the mainstream gives the cinema a unique identity. It is not just a place for film screenings, but also a meeting place for like-minded people, a place where the art of cinema is celebrated.

My first time at Xenix was closely followed by second, third and fourth times, and I can proudly announce that the cinema has now found its 1501 member in me.

It’s sparkling, shimmering and glistening everywhere. To go with that, a quote from Dolly Parton: ‘There’s no such thing as too much glitter’. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
